The Grant Application Process The Summit Foundation supports charitable organizations that enhance the quality of life in Summit County and Neighboring Communities. Grants are awarded twice each year, in June and in December, to agencies providing programs or services in the areas of health and human service, art and culture, education, environment and sports. Additionally, The Foundation supports two scholarship programs at Summit High School. Scholarships are available to graduating seniors each year. The graduating senior program has been expanded to include Leadville, Fairplay, Kremmling and Buena Vista. In 2002, a sophomore year scholarship was established. Previous senior scholarship recipients are eligible to apply to the program. Additionally a 4-year scholarship is awarded to a current graduate.
The Summit Foundation announces its grant cycles each year. Notices are provided to local newspapers and radio stations. Once the specific deadline is established (typically in March and August), agencies must request or download a copy of the current grant application and guidelines. Applications are generally available 6 to 8 weeks prior to the grant deadline. Grant applications are not automatically mailed to organizations that are past funding recipients. It is the responsibility of the organization to request and use the current documents.
Applicants for funding must be tax exempt under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) and 170(b)(1)(a)(i.V.I.) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation funds specific projects, which have measurable results. Organizations requesting funding support will only be considered for funding once in a calendar year. Requests for programs or projects already completed are not eligible for funding. The Foundation will not participate in any political campaign on behalf of any issues or candidate. The Summit Foundation does not fund religious institutions and organizations. Late and/or incomplete applications are not accepted.
The Board of Trustees of The Foundation determines final approval of grants. The Summit Foundation regularly receives grant requests, which exceed the availability of funds and cannot fund all requests. However, all requests, which meet the funding guidelines of The Foundation, are given full consideration by the Board.
